    Art Market Studies

    Understand the business of art

    The Master of Arts program in Art Market Studies provides students with the knowledge and skills to successfully navigate the global art world. Graduates apply their passion for art and business acumen to a variety of dynamic rolesin commercial art galleries, auction houses, art fairs, museums, foundations, online platforms, and art appraisal firms. The program takes full advantage of its location in New York City—and, more specifically, in Chelsea, the hub of the New York art world—to immerse students in this exciting, evolving field. Frequent guest speakers and site visits offer vivid insights and privileged access.

    The first two semesters of the program feature intensive training in a range of subjects, from art law to valuation to the history of contemporary art. The curriculum integrates interdisciplinary studies with practical experience. For instance, in AM 654 Practicum: Exhibition, students organize, curate, and promote their own gallery exhibition, handling every aspect of the process—selecting the artists, managing the budget, installing the show, and designing all marketing materials.

    The three-semester program culminates in a flexible and customizable final semester. Students may choose to complete an academic thesis or pursue additional business-oriented coursework. Students also hone their skills and advance their careers through a required internship.  


    • FIT is ideally located in Chelsea, New York's premier gallery district. Hundreds of commercial art galleries, as well as a number of foundations and museums, are within easy reach of campus.
    • The faculty is comprised of distinguished academics and art professionals with considerable experience and recognized expertise.
    • Classes are supplemented by site visits to galleries, artists' studios, private collections, auction houses, and museums. Guest speakers in the 2018-2019 academic year came from organizations such as: Art Basel, Christie's, Phillips, the New Art Dealers Alliance, MoMA PS1, Pace Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, Artnet, Kickstarter, Columbia University, the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Museum, MoCA Detroit, Swann Auction Galleries, UOVO, and Artsy (among many others).
    • Students gain valuable hands-on experience through a required internship. Recent internship sites include Christie's, Sotheby's, Artnet, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, David Zwirner Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, and Untitled Art Fair.
    • Field study coursework exposes students to the global marketplace.
    • Study and research is enhanced by access to a wealth of resources, both on campus (The Museum at FIT and the Gladys Marcus Library) and beyond (the Archives of American Art, the Frick Art Reference Library, and the Thomas J. Watson Library, to name just a few). 
    • Students have the ability to supplement the MA curriculum with additional coursework. Full-time graduate students at FIT may take undergraduate courses (including art history, fine art, and language classes) free of charge.
